Doctor G Review - Ayushmann Khurrana's Campus Comedy Breaks Unwanted Taboo Of Medical Field

The brand ambassador of taboo-breaking films, Mr. Ayushmann Khurrana, is back with another taboo subject, Doctor G, alongside Rakul Preet and Shefali Shah. The film enters the new taboo zone, Medical. We have this saying, "Never hide anything from your doctor and lawyer." That's true, though. You can't get a proper solution to your problems if you don't open up everything to your doctors. Gynaecology is one of the most taboo topics in the medical world because it's about women and their pregnancy. Words like bleeding, period, vagina and many more are still big taboos in our daily life. Even the medical field has the same issue. Doctor G is about that small-minded thinking all males and females have about gynaecology. Women are still too shy to go to a male gynaecologist, and on the other hand, even males are not too keen on joining the gynaecology field as their profession. Doctor G breaks multiple taboos that happen in the medical campus, from doctor's consulting rooms to operating theatres.publive-imageDoctor G is about a medical student, Uday (Aayushmann Khurrana), who gets gynaecology as his subject for PG, while he wanted to go for orthopaedics. Hesitated and reluctant, Uday is rubbed by girls during practicals, but soon gets friendly with them. Fatima (Rakul Preet) and Uday begin an affair, which has many internal problems. Meanwhile, Uday is taunted by a senior doctor, Nandini (Shefali Shah), who is a straight-forward supporter of equality in the medical field. Uday learns a lot about women and their problems during the process and also grows mature from the inside. The rest of the story follows his fight against all the odds he faces to keep his "male touch" away from his profession.publive-imageDoctor G has a good and very risky subject, but it isn't well executed—both on paper and on screen. Sourabh Bharat and Vishal Wagh's writing is too uncomfortable for the families and female audience. The jokes, humour, and sensitivity are way ahead of time, and frankly, we are not ready for such below-the-belt jokes yet. What it misses the most is family values and social awareness. Why would anyone be interested in Uday and Fatima's platonic affairs, and what's that got to do with women's equality? The entire love story spoils this gutsy story because it just doesn't fit into the narrative. Also, the screenplay is too stretched to hold your attention, despite a healthy runtime of 123 minutes. Doctor G fails to keep things in order, and that's what pulls it down from being a decent film.publive-imageAyushmann Khurrana failed once again after Anek this year. He had the best script sense for any Bollywood actor in the last four-five years, but this year he seems to have lost his form. Despite the poor writing, the actor in him remains very consistent. Rakul Preet is enjoying the busiest phase of her career, and this year she has the highest number of Bollywood films coming for any actress. Her performances and versatility are growing with every film, but Doctor G just didn't have enough fuel for her vehicle. The best performance in the film comes from Shefali Shah, who is getting better with each next project she takes on. Sheeba Chaddha, Abhay Chintamani, Paresh Pahuja, Jhumma Mitra, and Azzy Bagria add decent support with some funny lines.publive-imageAmit Trivedi's music sounds underwhelming, but 'Newton song is really a good attempt. The lyrics for that song are crispy, while others remain below the line. The cinematography and editing seem ordinary, with extra efforts from the forces behind it. A couple of sensitive scenes like baby delivery and operations could have been shot and edited in a much better way. It is clearly visible that a highly risky topic like taboos on gynaecology went into the wrong hands. Debutant Anubhuti Kashyap just didn't understand the assignment. If it hadn't been for a few good scenes, Doctor G would have been a big mess. Many scenes look incomplete and unnecessary, and that's where the direction of Anubhuti is questioned. Overall, Doctor G may be a gutsy attempt, but nothing more than an average outing.
