Kuttey Review - An Unwanted Crossbreed of Blue Greed & Grey Results

Aasmaan Bhardwaj makes his directorial debut with Kuttey with an ensemble cast of Tabu, Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Radhika Madan, Konkona SenSharma, Kumud Mishra and Shardul Bhardwaj. This is a crime thriller with a lot of forceful humour and twists that has unfortunately been released 5-6 years late to its trending topic. Bhardwaj is a name that comes with the trademark of dark and grey films, but here, Kuttey is a little blue too. It's a crossbreed of grey events and blue characters, and when two dark-shade mammals merge, you know the baby is going to be nothing but black! Kuttey is too black and dark for Hindi cinema audiences, who don't even watch such films on OTT. Those classes or movie buffs who watch such films have seen all these crime-comedy-thrillers from British and French cinema decades ago.publive-imageA group of some greedy but needy people wants to make quick money to save their neck, but all these dogs have one prey. A private company van is carrying crores of cash, and a group of greedy and dishonest people is after the money that's inside the van on one rainy night. Unaware of each other, three stray gangs cross paths on the hunt. Will they hunt each other or make unnatural deals between them when nobody in the group can be trusted to be true? Kuttey is about exposing those characters, and believe me, none of them is a clean one.publive-imageThe screenplay of Kuttey has kept things exciting with its line-up of events. However, it is too messy and has too many characters to deal with. Therefore, every character gets a limited amount of screen space, which is highly irregular. It's unfair to the characters too. By the intermission, you have things straight and clear, so it doesn't really offer anything new in the second half. By now, you know every character, his nature, his mind, and even his brain, so you can easily guess what he or she is going to do next. And it all comes with a lot of Gaali-galoch and sexual content. I don't mind writers and screenwriters using words like MC, BC, FY and bla bla in today's movies, especially in crime sagas, but why use them unnecessarily? Use it where it is needed and where it is used. We all know there are some uncouth and dishonest people in the police department, but how can you defame the department by showing almost every cop as a scullion? Show some decency, man.publive-imageKuttey has a big cast, and big names have certainly done what they were hired for. Tabu is irritating as a character but not as an actor. Okay, she utters some bullshit dialogue with a rowdy accent, but look how she carries the same character ahead in different situations. Arjun Kapoor still needs to work on his versatility. Somehow, he ends up looking the same in every film. Kuttey has wasted good actors like Naseerudin Shah and Konkona SenSharma. They hardly have 4-5 scenes, and they are useless too. Radhika Madan's glam appeal is increasing with each passing film, but I wish she would increase her versatility too. Kumud Mishra is decent, whereas Shardul Bhardwaj is okayish.publive-imageDhan Te Da was a huge hit in my college days, but this recreated version is not even half of the original. The other songs are in the screenplay only to disturb your mood, unless you love their lyrics. The cinematography is well focused in the forest scene; otherwise, strictly okay. Kuttey has dialogue that will even make your home-dog bark loudly. "Logic ki maa ki aankh, ye mera character hai." That's exactly what the Bhardwajs mean. "Violence , violence, violence. I don't like it. Violence likes me." Bhardwajs be like, "Violence, Dark Theme, Abuses.. we don't like it. They like us." Kuttey is too late for 2023, and I am not talking about that particular twist—that national event. It's actually late as a film because British and French cinemas have explored everything decades ago, and Kuttey only follows those cliches and theories like a "Street Dog." Watch the Marathi movie Nashibvaan's climax and tell me what's new here? Overall, 2023 starts with an unwanted dark film when all we were looking for was some new light.
