Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Review : The maverick Karan Johar is back with a bang with "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani," starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. Now this is what you call a mega family entertainer that puts all the finest elements of romance, comedy, drama and emotions in one package, adding even a critical layer of progressive thinking in this commercial potboiler. It has a KJO stamp all over, and it's modern. It takes guts to attempt several social and family taboos together in the romantic family drama genre, and Mr. Johar is the only Johari who knows how to handle it. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is everything we have been missing from a big-screen blockbuster, and Karan Johar ends the dry spell for Bollywood viewers in true style!Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt come together after a superhit film, "Gully Boy," but RRKPK is not at all related to it. You have seen their raw avatars and intense chemistry there, and here, RRKPK presents these two in a very refreshing and classy manner. The elevation of romance from normal flirting to open-minded checkouts is brilliantly done by the writers, and then there is KJO's Midas touch to make it even better. Karan Johar has outdone any recent ensemble cast with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, as the combined might of young stars Ranveer and Alia with legends like Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi seems just unbeatable. RRKPK makes everything look big and lavish with large sets, stupendous execution, and Karan Johar's masterful vision.Rocky Randhawa (Ranveer Singh), a rich Delhi ka launda, falls in love with a Bengali journalist, Rani (Alia Bhatt), despite having nothing in common and their cultures being exactly opposite to each other. Rocky's grandfather, Kamal (Dharmendra), has a memory loss problem, and the trigger for his memory is his platonic affair, Jamani (Shabana Azmi), who happens to be Rani's grandmother. Rocky's grandmother, Dhanalakshmi (Jaya Bachchan), and father, Tijori (Aamir Bashir), are quite old-fashioned, which takes the Randhawa family decades back. Rani, on the other hand, is a very modern girl, and she decides to switch families to see if they can fit in each other's families or not. The swipe is tough as both have different lifestyles and cultures, but the emotional entanglement of human feelings is what makes the plot engaging.Ranveer Singh is back in the mass zone, and how freaking hilarious he is. He may be a little crooked, but that's what defines his character throughout the movie. Like Alia says, "Tu kya hai yaar," even I want to say the same thing: " Bhai Ranveer, tu hai kya?" Alia Bhatt is beautiful and natural as ever as Rani, but more than that, her character has a progressive mindset that makes this classic entertainer contemporary. The woman empowerment message resonates well with Rani's character, and it works mostly because Alia Bhatt is such a natural. Seeing Dharmendra Ji in such a hysterical role is the biggest surprise of the movie. You'll clap, hoot, and scream seeing him do all those things, which one shouldn't just spoil here. Jaya Bachchan is such a natural actor. Every single frame has her emoting as a true veteran actor. She didn't even have to speak to make us laugh in many moments, and we were jumping out of our seats just by looking at those furious eyes. The way Shabana ma'am has transformed herself into a Bengali woman, be it her looks or accent, everything is perfect. Tota Roy Chowdhury, Kshitee Jog, Churni Ganguly, Abhinav Sharma, and Anjali Anand have played a very important role, and all are fine.Coming to the music, "Tum Kya Mile" is the romantic chartbuster of the season; "What Jhumka" looks grand on the screen; "Dhindora Baje Re" is lavish and situational; and "Ve Kamleya" sets the right tone for the film. The opening credits song has many surprises, so watch out. From Shah Rukh Khan, Mannat, Shamita Shetty, old songs, Rocky's English, Rani's spontaneous answers, and Jaya Bachchan's extremely intense but hilarious expressions, RRKPK has impeccable humour and dialogue that will attract the masses and classes alike. The only problem with the film is that the second half is a little bit stretched, and the film seems 15 minutes longer than necessary. You know Karan Johar's cinema, and you get it here in true style, but the way he transforms his blockbuster rom-com and entertaining family drama into a progressive and meaningful film at the same time is what makes RRKPK special. That's what Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is. What we need today is entertainment with content and a message, and Karan Johar gives you both. Book your tickets now.
