Sector 36 Review:
Sector 36 stars Vikrant Massey in an unconventional role and Deepak Dobriyal in a conventional role, and this face-off is what makes it a MUST-WATCH film. To add more, it's a psycho killer movie, breaking all the previous barriers to set itself as a new template in Bollywood's filmmaking club.
The film is about a psycho killer, Prem Singh (Vikrant Massey), who kidnaps women and girls and kills them. After that, he cuts them into pieces and does so many unbearable and unmatchable things that should not be revealed here, or rather, can't be described here.
On the other side, we have a police officer, Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal), who is not very interested in catching this psycho killer and reducing the crime rate in his area. However, his character sees a 180° shift when a similar criminal attempt is made with his own daughter. Realizing the horrors of the case and what it feels to be the father of a missing child, he begins a serious and thorough investigation.
The strings in this case have strong "system" vibes and pressure that you'll definitely find interesting. The face-off between Ram and Prem reveals many brutal facts that are difficult to digest, but that's the biggest USP of this script by Bodhayan Roychaudhury.
Sector 36 begins on an intensely funny scene as Prem is watching KBC and is regretting why he can't be there on the hot seat. To make the best of it, the writer shows his character as a potential Bina who knows the answer to most of the questions. Then Prem blames the "system" and "society" for that, making it a personal issue. The idea makes his character look more powerful because there is nothing uncommon or unusual about it. He is a simple, common man with regular problems but horrible past memories. Just like Hollywood's Saw series, he is on a revenge spree and wants others to "feel what he feels." The circumstances and consequences both differ here, though.
The first scene of Deepak Dobriyal shows him as a true patriot officer, but soon we realize that he is just another normal police officer put down by the system. A close camera angle shows you a cockroach trying to get out of a hole, and Ram crushes him, saying, "Cockroach Kitna bhi body banaa le, system ke niche kuchala jaata hai," and metaphorically, that's exactly what happens to him later while investigating the case. b is filled with such metaphors and anti-system taunts that will shake you. The brutality and the severe use of violence and killings will shatter you for sure.
Vikrant Massey looks damn confident as an actor here. Unlike his previous conventional roles, he attempts a brutal and unapologetic character and makes it memorable for his fans. 12th Fail or whatever image you have in mind, Vikrant will erase that with Sector 36. That confession scene will show you a new side of his acting finesse, which actually turns out to be the best scene in the entire movie. Deepak Dobriyal is solid and impeccable as Inspector Ram, despite a switch in his character. His first Chase sequence with Ram ends with him looking at the posters, sighing, and then you remember that in the climax—pin drop silence moment for the people who understand art. Akash Khurana and Darshan Jariwala have small roles, but they have done decent jobs. The supporting cast has also done well in their small small parts.
On the technical front, it's a strong movie. The background score gives you a chilling experience and elevates the scenes a notch higher. The camerawork is fantastic, be it the first frame when Ram is watching KBC and the TV frame is reversed, or the cockroach scene, or the killing scenes, the investigation, drilling, and even those photo-frame scenes. You'll notice the intelligence of cinematographer Saurabh Goswami.
A. Sreekar Prasad's editing is fine, as the film doesn't really have any boring moments or a moment to miss. Aditya Nimbalkar makes a fantastic debut in Bollywood, and as a pupil of Vishal Bhardwaj, we can say he has made the Guru very proud. As a whole, Sector 36 is damn good and a must-watch psycho killer thriller that we rarely see in Bollywood. Don't miss this one, or else you'll miss a gripping, mind-shattering thriller.
