publive-imageOn this day, in 1998 (16th October), one of the biggest box office clashes of the 90's decade took place as Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai took on Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Raveena Tandon and Ramya Krishnan's comedy flick, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, at the box office.

Govinda was ruling the 90s decade with his out-and-out funny comedies, while Amitabh Bachchan was trying to come back harder with a commercial blockbuster. The pairing of Govinda and Big B made sure that Bade Miyan Chote Miyan opened to packed houses. The film smashed SRK-Rani-Kajol's love triangle on the opening day, opening weekend, and opening week's number by a 20-25% margin, but the lifetime collections saw some different scenarios.

Bade Miyan on its opening day, Chote Miyan managed to grab 300+ screens and collect more than 1 crore nett. In the opening weekend, the film crossed the 3 crore nett mark, while the first week stood at 6.30 crore nett. Till here, the film was leading, but then Kuch Kuch Hota Hai took over from the second week as it became a trending topic amongst young audiences, especially couples.

Karan Johar's debut had an opening of 87 lacs, whereas the opening weekend figures were 2.75 crore nett approx. Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji's romantic triangle minted 5.65 crore nett in the first week and most of the trade people thought that the battle was over. It wasn't. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai picked up from the second week and then enjoyed a solid 12-week run on 240 screens.

Coming to the final total of both the films, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan earned 19 crore nett and 33 crore gross at the domestic box office against the 46.12 crore nett and 80 crore gross of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It was a big victory for Karan Johar and the leading trio of the film, as KKHH went on to become the highest grossing Bollywood movie of the year 1998.

In the overseas markets, it was a one-horse race for the Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji starrer. The SRK-Kajol trio had become popular in the overseas markets with the humongous success of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, but KKHH even surpassed that. The film collected a huge $6.3 million in the overseas markets to become the highest grossing Bollywood movie of the decade in international markets. On the other hand, David Dhawan's comedy failed to make even a $1 million mark at the overseas box office.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai also became the only third Bollywood movie to cross 100 crore gross at the worldwide box office after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! (1994) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). The film cemented SRK-Kajol's popularity in the international markets, resulting in a blockbuster success for every film they did together after this.
