Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan turns 45 older today and though most people only know him as the man behind the Dark Knight series, Nolan has many other good films to his credit and on the occasion of his birthday, let's have a look at five of his films, which have totally wowed us…
Memento
Legend has it that while on a road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles, Christopher's brother Jonathan pitched the idea for 'Memento Mori', about a man with anterograde amnesia who uses notes and tattoos to hunt for his wife's murderer. Nolan developed a screenplay that told the story in reverse and the film went on to become a hit both critically and commercially. Starring Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano, Memento was considered one of the best Hollywood flicks of 2000. The film was later remade as Ghajini in Bollywood.Insomnia
Starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank, Insomnia was a psychological thriller about two Los Angeles homicide detectives investigating a murder in an Alaskan town. This film too was a critical as well as a commercial success.Batman Begins
Nolan struck the jackpot when he made Batman Begins, a superhero flick set in a realistic and dark world and reinvented the dark anti-hero Batman. Starring Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, Michael Caine and Katie Holmes, Batman Begins was a major hit, especially because of its dark theme and gritty portrayal. The film was such a big success that it inspired a trilogy. The Prestige
A story that revolved around the rivalry between two 19th century magicians in London, The Prestige starred Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as the warring magicians. The film also starred Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Andy Serkis and others. The Dark Knight
The sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight immortalized Heath Ledger after his brilliant portrayal of the anarchist criminal Joker. Ledger's get up, his body language and the way he played the role, ensured that he owned the film throughout. The film also starred Aaron Eckhart, who played righteous DA Harvey Dent, who turns into the homicidal Two-Face after a tragedy sends him off the edge of sanity. The film received eight Academy Award nominations; it also won the award for Best Sound Editing and Ledger was posthumously awarded Best Supporting Actor.Inception
This is the kind of flick that you need to watch more than once just to wrap the idea around your head. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Tom Berenger, Michael Caine and others, Inception revolved around a group of professional thieves, who commit corporate espionage by infiltrating the subconscious minds of their targets through dreams. Needless to say, Inception too was a major hit and was much appreciated for its special effects and its grand vision.
