New Update

publive-imageCirkus director Rohit Shetty is called a hit machine of Bollywood, and rightly so. The box office verdicts of his last few films haven't missed a "Hit" verdict at the box office. He makes films for the public, who come to cinemas for entertainment. Not the intellectual critics or smart movie buffs. The formula has kept him high, and he is following the same as he likes doing that business. But doesn't it seem that he has been losing his touch slowly, or is it the entire Bollywood industry that doesn't make good comedies nowadays?

I don't know about others, but Rohit's Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006) remains my favourite comedy from his filmography. His last film that has gotten immense repeat volume was a decade ago, Singham (2011). These are the films that made him a brand, made people believe in him, and people nowadays go to watch movies just by seeing his name. Rohit Shetty hai to time-pass film hogi.publive-imageLooking at the Cirkus trailer, it seems that he is looking his touch on organic comedy. Mind you, it has nothing to do with the box office. May his film do better than his previous hit at the box office. But wouldn't it be amazing to see a film with a high repeat value like Singham or Golmaal 1? Wouldn't that just explode the box office?publive-imageThe Cirkus trailer is indeed underwhelming, at least for the critic in me. Rest, the buzz seems good, Deepika's cameo is bombastic, the Golmaal connection is fantastic, and a potential chartbuster Current Laga will make sure that film opens huge at the box office, depending very much on how Avatar: The Way of Water is received in the second week. People nowadays are missing good comedies, and that hunger will make sure Rohit Shetty makes another 100 crores this Christmas. But the question is: will it make 200 crores? Let's wait and watch.
