One of Mumbai's most iconic cinemas, the Eros Theatre, situated in South Mumbai's Churchgate area, is reportedly being torn down. There is no confirmation about it yet, but it all started after writer-editor Apurva Asrani shared the news on his Twitter handle, writing, "Heartbreaking to see #ErosTheatre being torn down. This South Bombay Art Deco landmark, built in 1938, was where I bunked college to go to. It's where I went on my first date & where my first film #Satya was released in '98. Sad that Mumbai can't preserve its heritage buildings."However, a few media people are claiming that the news can be untrue too. Apurva also gave an update that he learned from sources that they (the Eros Theatre owners) are not going to demolish the building but will renovate it. A report in Live Mint confirmed the same. Before we get confirmation from officials, let's have a look at how Bollywood celebrities reacted to the news.Director Onir responded, "The only thing that seems to matter is money. architectural history, memories of the city have no value. Shame on whoever chose to take over this landmark building and demolish it … instead of renovating it. @CMOMaharashtra please stop this and let our city nurture its heritage."
Each time a single screen theatre is torn down, a piece of my childhood dies. 4 of my films released here. Watched hundreds of films, specially Matinee shows of world films. But then I also understand practicality and viability….. #Nostalgia https://t.co/P1cyrL8QjI

Actor Vir Das recalled his memories, saying, "Watched Rang De Basanti there. Had a job at CNBC, walked out of the theatre, decided to give being a performer a full shot, and started auditioning."If you remember, similar news was reported about Chitra Cinema in Dadar. The cinema hall was shut down during the lockdown and didn't open even after the restrictions were lifted. But now, Chitra Cinema has been reopened with newly renovated decorations. We hope the same happens with Eros Cinema.
