Rohit Shetty's multi-starrers losing clash against young stars

Rohit Shetty has had many box office clashes in his career and has won most of them but two. And these two happen to be young stars' movies, and the films that got defeated were multi-starrers. Back in the 2000-2010's decade, Shetty won clashes like Golmaal Returns vs. Fashion (2008), All The Best vs. Blue (2009), Golmaal 3 vs. Action Replayy (2010), and Golmaal Again vs. Secret Superstar, not including semi-clashes like ZNMD vs. Singham (2011), Chennai Express vs. Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Dobaara (2013), and Zero vs. Simmba. However, he did lose two major clashes with his big multi-starrers in 2015 and now in 2024, which was unexpected but somewhat justified with the kind of products they were.

Dilwale

In 2015, Rohit Shetty's Dilwale, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, and Kriti Sanon, released a week before Christmas, up against Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani, led by Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra. Since Shetty and Khan were coming after the record-breaking success of Chennai Express (2013), the trade and fans had similar expectations from Dilwale. However, the film didn't live up to the expectations, nor did it become a HIT. Moreover, it lost the clash against Bajirao Mastani, which had a smaller cast but a higher budget at the domestic box office. The worldwide numbers of Dilwale were higher due to SRK-Kajol's immense popularity in international markets, and the film was an all-time blockbuster in foreign markets.

Singham Again

Now, almost after a decade, a similar thing happened on Diwali 2024. Singham Again was touted to be the grandest film in the cop-universe and also the biggest Bollywood movie of the year, be it budget or the cast. Rohit Shetty brought a dream ensemble cast together with Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Salman Khan.

As almost half of Bollywood came together in an action-packed flick, the trade and fans again had high expectations, but the film underperformed. Besides, the clash with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 got dirty. Singham Again opened bigger than Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, but eventually the horror comedy overtook the cop universe saga, despite being a smaller film. A similar thing had happened with Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani, as the former opened bigger but lost the final battle.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3

Kartik Aaryan, Madhuri Dixit, and Vidya Balan's Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has earned more than Singham Again at the domestic box office. Speaking of verdicts, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has been declared a "Super Hit" by Box Office India, while Singham Again got an "Average" verdict due to its high budget. Rohit's film repeats the history!
