Shyam Benegal's "Manthan," India's First Crowdfunded Film, Goes To Cannes 2024

ManthanManthan at Cannes 2024 : Shyam Benegal's Manthan (1976) is getting a restored version that will be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2024.

Filmmaker-archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur has worked tirelessly on the restoration of the print that was literally destroyed. Singh, along with Naseeruddin Shah, Dr. Kurien’s daughter, Nirmala Kurien, and Benegal’s daughter, Pia Benegal, will be attending the Cannes gala on May 14th.publive-imageManthan has a glorious history to its name. It was the first crowdfunded Indian film, as 500,000 farmers donated Rs. 2 each, and the film was made under the banner of Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd.

The film, based on White Revolution, won the Best Feature Film in Hindi and Best Screenplay (Vijay Tendulkar) at the National Film Awards in 1977. Manthan was submitted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1976.ManthanWritten by Verghese Kurien and Shyam Benegal, the film had a brilliant cast that included Smita Patil, Girish Karnad, Naseeruddin Shah, and Amrish Puri.
