Kenya Barris, best known for his work on the ABC sitcom Black-Ish, will write and direct a modern-day adaptation of the classic musical The Wizard of Oz for Warner Bros. The project will be produced by his company, Khalabo Ink Society. The details of the project are kept under wraps, but as reported by Deadline, this new version will be slightly different from the previous adaptations. The basic plot is taken from L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of OZ. The novel has been adapted many times on the silver screen in the last 12 decades. As per Deadline reports, Barris' take will be "a modern reimagining of the iconic musical." There have been more than a dozen film adaptations of Oz's magical world, but MGM's 1939 film adaptation, starring Judy Garland, has remained special to date. Will Kenya Barris surpass it? We will know soon.
