Steven Spielberg has seen a rough phase at the box office with his last release. His last good-earner was Ready Player One (2018), which earned over $600 million at the box office. His next releases, West Side Story (2021) and The Fabelmans (2022), couldn't even reach the $80 million mark at the global ticket windows. Now, the celebrated director of blockbusters like Jaws, ET, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park is set to return with a big "event movie." The film will be written by David Koepp, who was a partner with him on Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones: The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and War of the Worlds.
As the latest rumours have it, this new event movie is said to be based on UFOs, taking us back to Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). It is being produced by Universal Pictures and is scheduled for release on May 15, 2026, marking Steven Spielberg's return to blockbuster summer releases.
