Biggest Diwali blockbusters of Bollywood:
Bollywood has seen many huge blockbusters on Diwali, and it has been the biggest festival for movie celebrations for the last 7-8 decades. Eid and Christmas became more lethal with Salman Khan and Aamir Khan giving back-to-back blockbusters during 2008-2016. It was just after Shah Rukh Khan made Diwali special by scoring the most number of hits on this festival.
Mehboob Khan's masterpiece Mother India (1957) tops the list by almost a double margin. The film was released during the Diwali festival in 1957 and went on to become the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of all time. The mega blockbuster collected over 4 crore nett and 8 crore gross at the Indian Box Office and sold over 11 crore tickets, which remains unbeaten till date.
After that, we have Amitabh Bachchan's Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), which had created tremendous hype at the time of its release. It turned out to be Prakash Mehra's biggest blockbuster ever and Big B's second biggest blockbuster ever after Sholay (1975). Amitabh had another huge blockbuster in the 80s on this prosperous festival with Mard (1985).
Cut to the 90s, we have many huge blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Raja Hindustani, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Hum Saath Saath Hai coming in a row. After that, Mohabbatein remains the only huge blockbuster released on Diwali, while the rest of the films were far behind in terms of footfalls (number of tickets sold). So, let's have a look at the numbers of the last 5-6 decades, as the data before that is not available at the moment (except Mother India due to its insane popularity).
